The Retail Hive Signal Index

Beyond the stage and behind the session titles, we analysed the conversations at Supply Chain Leaders to reveal what is really front of mind for retail leaders now.

This document is a snapshot of conversations captured by The Hive team during the event and does not reflect every discussion. It is intended as a directional guide only.

Retail supply chains are operating in a far more volatile and interconnected environment than even a few years ago. Leaders are balancing rising customer expectations, regulatory complexity, operational costs and unpredictable demand, often while trying to modernise legacy systems and processes at the same time.

AI remains an area of huge interest, but the consensus was clear: good decisions still depend on strong data, realistic operating models and human judgement (for now at least).

Complexity is the new operating reality

• cross-border compliance
• tariff volatility
• customs readiness
• returns complexity
• fragmented delivery models
• inventory risk
• regulatory uncertainty
• operational visibility

Alignment matters more than optimisation

• supply chain vs. commercial priorities
• disconnected forecasting
• siloed teams
• unclear stock accountability
• supplier misalignment
• inconsistent customer promises
• weak integration between systems and teams

AI interest is practical, not transformational

• where is the ROI?
• what admin can AI remove?
• how can AI support forecasting?
• where does human oversight still matter?
• AI as support layer, not silver bullet

Customer expectations continue to rise

• delivery choice
• click & collect growth
• communication during delays
• locker and out-of-home delivery
• balancing convenience with profitability
• matching fulfilment models to customer behaviour

Risk and resilience are now commercial priorities

• inventory exposure
• overstock and cash flow pressure
• supply disruption
• compliance risk
• margin erosion
• supplier dependency
• freight volatility
• balancing speed vs cost
